Appreciating David’s Output

You know, after reading about Jordin Sparks’s stalled music career (thanks for the link, Grammyj!), I now have a much deeper appreciation for David Archuleta’s prolific output of five albums (or six, including the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s Glad Christmas Tidings).

Consider this: Jordin Sparks, who had the chance to launch her career a year earlier than David’s debut in 2008, was signed to the same Jive label. And yet, she has only had two albums, this despite not being “dropped” by Jive (the way David was, right?).

While we bellyached about David’s future, it seems as if Jordin Sparks was stalled with no real musical direction to go in while the shake-up occurred at the label. In between gigs, so to speak, she managed to appear on a Broadway show and now headlines her own movie, co-starring a music legend.  Not bad for a 22-year-old.

Still, I think – if we just measure these two Idols against each other – it just goes to show how determined David was in making music, with or without a major label or even management.

Despite the shake-up, David gave us five albums, a featured album with a world-renowned choir, a memoir, a foreign-language soap opera, and solo tours!

I’ve never taken the time to just be impressed by all David has accomplished at his young age, and how so much of his determination is driven both by his love for music and for his fans.

Imagine this: David planned to go away on a two-year mission, and before leaving, he gave us two more albums, rather than let his music career stall.

I see no reason why any of us should ever doubt that he can return to his career and find the same success.  He’s got the talent, the drive, and the willpower.

I’m just offering this little post to show my appreciation for all he’s done for us.

  1. Hellogorgeous — just want to say this made me SMILE — beautifully written! Thank you.

  2. Hg,—fabulously written—-BIG WIDE SMILE HERE, TOO!!!

  3. Yes HG!! David has accomplished a lot and given us so much. Fred Bronson also made it clear that all his albums in the US were in the Top 30 which also is quite an accomplishment. Proud of David and he did not compromise. 4 years ago yesterday he filmed Crush :))

  4. Yes, yes, and yes! David’s accomplishments in the past four years are very impressive, and my gosh, how he worked harder and produced amazing work far more than anyone I’ve ever followed in the last three months before he left for his mission. David is beyond deserving of anyone’s deep admiration. That’s why we are all still here and will be here for him when he gets back and for always.

  5. This post today, HG, has made me post for the 1st time here (I visit all the time). I so appreciate your thoughts about how hard David has worked for us. David definitely deserves all our love, respect…and appreciation… for everything he’s given us…..we are so blessed!

  6. I have said it before that I think that if David had stayed with Jive and then was folded into RCA like Jordin we would not have gotten the last two albums. He probably would still be “working on music” like most of the AI alums with little actual recordings to show for it. Jordin has been working on music off and on since her last album in 2009 and in her interview she said she had about seven songs ready for her next album but she wanted to take her time to get it right. Well, she did have some songs on the “Sparkle” soundtrack. I guess what I’m trying to say is that if David can get the financial backing as an indie artist he will give us more music than being with a major label IMHO.

  7. He’s worked so hard for us. Gotta love him for it. What about the iTunes Fan Pack? I know it was only a couple of songs and the Touch My Hand Video but, at the time, we were clamoring for a studio recording of Zero Gravity and A Thousand Miles and D obliged!

  8. Great picture, HG! When you were talking about David coming back and his future success and you said “He’s got the talent, the drive, and the willpower.” He also has a 4th thing – CHARISMA! That sets him apart from almost all the idols, including Jordin. He exudes charisma. I am always reminded of it when I happen across a video like this one with Brooke Whitre, Michael Johns and Benton Paul. They invite David up on stage to sing with them and the second he is there every eye is on him. It doesn’t matter if he tries to defer to them, the audience (even naysayers) wait for whatever sound is going to come out of that mouth. It doesn’t really matter what the others do – it is all David from that moment. He really has a lot of personal power and I love it when he owns that power on stage. Now when he comes back, others outside the hardcore fans and Idol fans need to simply know that he is out there. Here’s Brooke & Michael’s youtube:

  9. What a sweet post HG! All I can is there is so much WIN to go around. To David for all his hard work, to HG for reminding us about it in writing, and to the great comments and video added. As CQ said – “there’s a BIG, WIDE Smile HERE too”. 😀

  10. I was reading an interview with Pink and thought about David at this part:

Is it surreal to think your career is at this point right now? Because there was a period after 2003’s “Try This” and even after “Stupid Girls” in 2006 when your singles weren’t taking off in the U.S. Was that time frustrating for you?

I never looked at it that way. I was always on the road in the U.K. and Australia, and things were really great over there. Then I got to come home and be left alone. And you know what? It gave me lot of time to create my show and to become a performer. I would go on 22-month tours and work my ass off, and it’s been the biggest blessing of my life that now I am a touring artist. It got me out of the popularity contest that music can be sometimes and gave me time to hone my craft as a stage performer. I’m also grateful, and I got to come back and do the Grammys [in 2010]. That was my “A-ha.”

    • this is inspiring. i like how Pink shows appreciation for the love her international fans showed. it must be humbling to see that individuals thousands of miles away from your home land can appreciate your artistry.

      • And David has his Asian fans. I hope he becomes a touring artist when he returns. That is what he is meant to do – sing for audiences.

  11. Hey, HG. I just wanted to tell you — I appreciate this post. I’m guilty too of sometimes forgetting just how prolific David has been in the past 4 years. Its fairly amazing, really. Thank you for reminding me and putting it in such a clear and concise format.

I think one of the things I appreciate so much about David is how much he appreciates (and gives) his fans. And we appreciate (and give to) him. Its a mutual appreciation society lol. I’m glad I’m part of it.

  12. Great article! Also appreciated your last several posts- just busy- but was there reading and pondering.

  13. Someone found a Missionary letter today that had a couple David mentions. Sounds like he was spotted by some girls in Santiago:

“Speaking of David Archuleta, I met him today. I can´t promise pictures, seeing as he doesn´t like them. It was interesting to see him walk up. We were at the train station doing cambios, and he was there. We did the normal Chilean greeting for men, with a handshake, hug, and handshake. I asked him if he was already here, or changing. Cool and strange to be standing by a guy who is know by millions of people. But alas, no pictures. I heard he went to Santiago to get his Visa and Carnet, basically a Chilean ID card, and in the metro station, some girls attacked and tried to kiss him. LOL.”

Poor David, you know how much he likes that – ha! Here’s a link to the letter: http://jordaninchile.blogspot.com/

  14. I too, TXNANCY, visit everyday, but seldom post. I have received my hard copy of BEGIN. This album is a gem. There are so many songs that speak to me. I do not have a favorite. For me to declare a favorite would, in some way, diminish the power of the others. But, one that resonates with me, right now, is Don’t Give Up. I offer no further explanation.

When I think of your beautiful post, HG, I also think of the many sacrifices that David must have had to make in order to make all the music that he has made. Six bloody albums! The sheer willpower to continue to make music; when he just “wanted to sing” and was getting comfortable with the idea that people wanting to hear him sing, and in less than ideal corporate (business) circumstances, David has sent a message to all that will hear him, a “coup d’ etat”, on his return to active duty. “I will continue to express myself through music.”

Love live, David. (The crowd cheers in expectation!)

    • So glad to see so many folks come out of the woodwork to express their feelings. 🙂 Mutual appreciation society indeed!

      “Six bloody albums!”

      Ralph, are you a Brit?

    • Sending hopeful thoughts your way Ralph. Re Don’t give up- that one is on replay for me also.
So many great things about it. David really conveys the emotion of the song- with a sense of hopelessness- countered by Libby’s insistent persistence. Libby really rose to the occasion with the emotion in her voice. I adore the production also- simple yet beautiful.- the guitar and especially the drum line. The whole mood of the song s on point. It is a real gem.

  15. today i received an email from david’s myspace that says: “Hey desertrat, David Archuleta sent you a message.” 😀

after 2+ yrs of not logging in to myspace, i finally figured out my password. i was surprised to see this message next to David’s tosod chair-leaning-back photo: “Hi Everyone on MySpace! can u guys Like My Friend Selena Gomez on Facebook! Please?”

i wonder if selena has hijacked his myspace account, lol.

  16. desertart, i got the same message from facebook,,hg great post, that vidio brought tears, miss that guy

  17. HG, Love this article! yes yes and yes! 😀

  18. HG, I really appreciate this post. David has given so much in such a small amount of time. We are a very lucky bunch! 😉

  19. I love the black and white pic of our guy up top. And I agree, David has a lot of drive.

I’ve been following Jesse McCartney’s career a bit; his album has been on hold for close to 2 yrs now. Last year he tweeted that the album would be released if his tv show was picked up. The show wasn’t picked up. This isn’t a knock to Jesse but his career seems very similar to Jordin’s in that they’ve both moved into acting and selling cosmetics (in their names) while they wait on their labels.

  20. Nicki Minaj and Kanye may be serving as Idol judges, lol. I believe Randy (dawg) has been given the boot.

  21. I’m wondering if David was in AI today, but the age and shyness he was in 2007, would he be torn apart by the new judges, like Kanye and Nicki (if indeed they are going to be judges). I’m thinking what AI is looking for is a unique act, not necessarily just a great singer.

    • You guys must have been reading my mind. lol All this talk of possible judges on the AI panel has made me very glad that David did go on AI when he did. You are right cq. I think AI may not be looking for that great voice any longer but were they ever. lol It is now just so obvious it is all about the judges and their careers and not the contestants. Mariah seems to be the only sure one on the panel right now. I think they will have “country” judge but not sure who it will be. Seems like some of these celebrities/music artists may have or have not been contacted by AI but are throwing their names out for the publicity. Nicki and Kayne would be interesting choices. lol I just wish they would name the judges and get it over with already. lol

      • i don’t think the jonas brother nor glambert are serious contenders for the judging role but they both seem to have gotten good publicity for it.

      • lol, Marie, yes they never really were looking for that great voice. I don’t watch all the singing reality shows, but it does seem like it’s all about the judges. It really comes down to ratings and right now, it seems that getting big names as judges is a good ratings grabber.

Another thought: Haven’t heard from Kari or David through Kari for a long time. I just feel that keeping some sorta of connection regularly is so important to his career. We had such a high from the BEGIN album, I guess I just want that momentum to continue.

  22. Re. Nicki Minaj, I really don’t know who she is beyond her stage persona. Re. Kanye, he helped John Legend’s career early on. Kanye signed Legend to his label and hired him to sing hooks on his raps. I know he was rude to Taylor Swift but he isn’t a bully in the Simon Cowell sort of way.

    • I didn’t know that about Kanye. I bet it they get Kanye they also get his girlfriend Kim K. in the audience which would make Seacrest happy. lol I don’t know much about Nicki either except she did have kind of a strange grammy performance this year that did not please some viewers. I do like some of her songs. I can’t see Mariah wanting Nicki as a judge. I would be surprised if Nick Jonas or Adam Lambert are still in the running with all these big names being mentioned.

    • I’ve been reading about all the people that are possibly going to be Idol judges. The list seems to be endless with additional names every day. They need to decide. I think it will probably be three new judges. I think Randy is out. Enrique Iglesias is another one supposedly in talks to be a judge. Someone said maybe America should vote on who the judges should be!

  23. I also like Enrique. I also personally think the judges from AGT would do a great job especially Howard Stern. Love how they leave personal projects off the show. It’s all about critiquing the contestants for better.

    • I agree with you joymus. I am a fan of Howard Stern on AGT.

      • I didn’t think I would like Howard Stern on AGT, but I actually think he does a pretty good job. I really liked the three judges on The Sing Off, but that show got low ratings last fall so I guess I was in the minority. Sara Bareilles, Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman were really good on that show with their critiques and constructive criticism.

  24. Oh, the irony of Kanye possibly being a judge on Idol when he had performed in a Jingle Jam at Madison Square Garden right BEFORE David Archuleta’s performance (and David still got tons of screams from the audience in comparison!).

    Those were the days…

    • Yeah, we thought David was on his way to be a superstar. Oh, well, it was fun to see David’s big popularity back then and his reaction. He remained humble through it all. He is happy whether he is singing to one or to many at Madison Square Garden.

    • Hg, still don’t understand why he isn’t a superstar….but I still feel that it still will happen.
This whole mission thing is gotten me torn in regards to his career. In one hand I think he needs time to mature and really know what direction he wants to go with his music. On the other hand, I feel that it hurts his career that he is not able to vlog and keep that oh, so needed connection with his fans.
Imo, one year hiatus would of been perfect, sometimes I wished that I wasn’t such a big fan, that way I wouldn’t be so fustrated about his career, lol.

      • I’m with ya, cq.

      • I agree cq. David’s having no direct communication with fans for 2 years is tough. Kari can just do so much and I would guess that she will need to be doing other jobs as a tour manager for other artists while David is away. Kari does a great job!! I wonder if Gina Orr still manages Crystal B. Gina just keeps such a low profile that you don’t know what she does do.

      • Glad to know that I’m not the only that has these thoughts.
I guess I have a greater problem than fans that are aboard the mission thing.

  25. Been thinking about these reviews of BEGIN lacking soul. David must of been in such a deep emotional place when he records BEGIN, I just don’t understand why that soul was not felt by these reviewers. Every note I feel soul, heart and emotion.

  26. David sold 4,000 this week of BEGIN so total sales are now 14,000 but wouldn’t they be 15,000 if he sold 11,000 last week? That is not bad at all. I thought he might just sell no more than 3,000. It would help if they had BEGIN in stock at the stores but it is on a small independent label. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/idolchatter/post/2012/08/idol-album-sales-underwood-clarkson-mccreery/1#.UDVDwaPEGM9

  27. Well at approximately $10/CD they have made between $140,000 to $150,000 (depending on if he sold 14,000 or 15,000). Production costs would be much less on this CD so I would bet they have made back the money spent to make and advertise it (since the marketing cost have also been low).

  28. David’s new vid….
