The Opposite Sides of David

Fan Love Series #1
Authored by Raelovingangels

Ever since getting to “fan” know David, I felt he is full of delightful contradictions. As I studied the lyrics of Something ‘Bout Love, there it was again: so many contrasting words and thoughts. Listening to his new single, I heard contemplative lyrics set against music that pulses aggressively to the end, with some adorable bubbly sound effects sprinkled in. I love the many colors, shades and shadows that seem to emanate from David and everything he does. As I was pondering the topic of my submission for my favorite little corner blog in Davidtown, Soul David,  the name of the new album was announced. The Other Side of Down. BAM! There it was again. A play on opposites. Ah, David is so many delightful contradictions.

So, I  was inspired to pen a little ode:

The Opposite Sides of David

He should not be “able” to sing, yet he does.
He works hard- but makes it look easy.

He is shy, but works a room like a polished politician.
He loves to Tweet but struggles to fit his thoughts in 140 spaces.
He shares himself totally, but closely guards his innermost heart.
He is very well known, but not really known.
He is visible and ninja….often at the same time.
He is simple and complex…..often at the same time.
He is confident and insecure.
He is youthful, but wise beyond his age.
He is serious and quirky.
He is funny without trying.
He rambles and makes sense
He rambles and doesn’t.
He is fidgety and “zen-like”.
He is spacey, but amazingly intuitive.
He sings when he talks.
He communicates through silence.
He has a young heart and an old soul.
He has a caretaking spirit, yet everyone wants to take care of him.
He has any army of defenders, yet he needs none.
He is conservative and liberal.
He is a risk taker and he is cautious.
He is open and he is unbending.
He is spiritual, but his feet are firmly planted on Earth.
Millions see something in him that he struggles to see in himself.
He has many opposite sides and all of them are simply delightful.

One of the many things I have taken from getting to know David from a distance, over the past 2 ½ years, is that people are not always what they seem and may be so much more than you ever expected.  So, I was wondering, in the very challanging  music business  that  David has ventured, what new “sides” of David do you think we will see as his amazing career continues to unfold?

Yikes… tiny print. Definitley an amatuer at work on that post. 🙂

  2. Great post raelovingangels! Love the ode. David is one of the most interesting people around. All the delightful opposites and contradictions make him wonderfully unique. I really enjoyed reading this!

  3. Hi Rae,
Congrats on your first authored post!! What a great read!

David’s new single aptly reflects our observed contradictions about him and hopes for his future….
His music can break our hearts yet set us free,
His label/management decisions tears us up inside yet we still believe,
and don’t give up because we sense that one day (soon or after a long while) all the thorny factors of this business will resolve in his favor.

In the meanwhile we live, laugh, debate and always HOPE in the best for David.

  4. Raelovingangels, great read! Yesterday as I was listening to SBL, I was thinking that another definition for “up” is “optimistic” and that the opposite is “pessimistic”. When I was younger and things would get me down, quite often I would consider giving up trying. My father used to tell me that “you can’t win the game of life if you don’t throw your hat in the ring and play”.

David is optimistic and a player. He may have some struggles to overcome during his career and he may not win every battle but as long as he continues to gain confidence and hangs in their, he will eventually win the war and achieve the unimaginable along the way.

  5. With regard to changes over the long run, these are my random thoughts.

I think that David will become an even tougher cookie as time goes by when it comes to his business career. Everyday it become more evident that this music business has unimaginable twists, turns and compromises, artists have to wrestle daily. How does a person of David’s forthrightness and character hold up against this onslaught?

I was recently watching MJ’s -This Is It video and was simply amazed how he took control of every single aspect of production. No stone was left unturned and every final decision was his. David does not yet have this level of power but can you imagine what will happen if he ever does? How will his image, music and self-promotion evolve? Will he make innovative industry history? Will he ever consider giving it all up for something else altogether? The possibilities are endless.

Thank you Joymus my Fla concert buddy! Great random thoughts. I am sure there will be unimaginable twists, turns and compromises as you said. How does someone like David balance it all? What an asture remark. Dare I even say that I sensed underneath a tiny bit of frustration? But- we are all here- & will be here- patiently waiting for what ever his path holds…so David has notrhing to worry in that regard.

Now- can we just have all those left over songs and an extra CD please? They do not have to go with the theme- just call it goolash or pot luck or womething.

  6. Wow, Rae, loved it. You touched on so many of the fascinating facets of this guy. This is going in my archives.

  7. Thumbs up, Rae!

  8. Rae, Great job articulating the paradox of David Archuleta! The dichotomy you described so well is a big part of why he is so intriguing to many of us. Thanks!

  9. A tweet from David:

“If all you know is what you see, then you don’t know very much.”

I hope this refers to the promotion of SBL. 🙂

  10. Lovely post rae ❤ I was actually going to write about this subject, but fortunately I didn't since you did a much better job than I could've 🙂

I'd add "David is the most gorgeous guy in the world but thinks he looks weird" to the list lol. In the future, I'm guessing David will become bolder when it comes to his looks and body. He has already taken a step towards that I think. David will learn to embrace his attractiveness and the fact that you can look good (well, A-freakin'-MAZING in his case) and know it, while still remaining modest and humble.

    • By the way, I hope everyone will keep supporting and appreciating David’s hard work, since he made a vlog just to tell us how much we motivate and inspire him. He seems so excited and happy – please stay positive so that David’s thank you’s are well-deserved 🙂 P.S. BEWARE of the first 2 seconds… WOW.

  11. Great post Rae…….. The Ying & the Yang of David

    another “opposite”

He is naive yet wordly wise

  12. raelovingangels

Thank you so much for your positive feedback. I had been thinking about this for a while, so when HG opened her blog for submissions- I tried to put something down.

Embe you are funny. I figured someone would go to the looks thing. I appreciate the other examples everyone has given.

This is just one tiny post- but I kinda stressed over it. David’s fans such a smart bunch that does not miss a trick. I took away a GREAT respect for all those who maintain fansites, blogs etc supporting David. You really put a quite bit of yourself out there to be judged by a pretty discerning and creative audience.. Hats off to all who keep the sites going, to their time, thoughts and creativity.

  13. Thanks for the post, Rae. Of all the paradoxes you mention in your sweet ode the one that stands out to me is “Millions see something in him that he struggles to see in himself.” I hope he soon embraces all the amazing qualitites we see, since some won’t see them unless he himself shows them. Like he once said “I’ll make them understand”. In the meantime we wait with unabated fan love.

🙂 We have seen so much growth in that area- It does seem that David is seizing his power more and more. Another pardox. So many people strive for power, fame and fortune. Here is someone who almost seems reluctant to have it. Probably because he realizes the great responsibility that goes along with it ( unlike most). I definatley think he should be a candidate for Barbara Walters most interesting people show.

  14. I don’t comment here very often, but i enjoy this site very much.

Raelovingangels: You have done a marvelous job at –your first little tiny post. ( in your words). I loved every word and I too shall print it out and share it with my family and tell them that this writer has nailed it!

    Don’t ya just love him.

  15. just saw this posted on FOD.

    From Ellen’s official website:

A couple months ago, I let FOX and the “American Idol” producers know that this didn’t feel like the right fit for me. I told them I wouldn’t leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next. It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for. I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings. I loved the experience working on “Idol” and I am very grateful for the year I had. I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be.

    • raelovingangels

I wonder if she quit before she was axed. I did not watch until the end but the bits I saw they were pretty mean. It just seemed like it went from more talent show when it started to really bad reality show with not much talent.

      • I wonder too. I always felt that she would better at hosting the show than judging. To me, she doesn’t come off as the type of person who would publicly hurt someone’s feelings just for a laugh. I hope she calls Kara D. and convinces her to step down too. 🙂

    • raelovingangels

what are they saying on twitter about Jessica Simpson? Frankly the show ended when Paula left anyway. They should not even give it a go another season.

  16. rae!!! awesome ode…. and so true!!! David is the opposite of so many of the negative things I see and hear! Well done:)

  17. Thanks Rae for your fun article. Love it!! I am keeping this one for my David scrapbook.
By the way, doesn’t David look and act a little big older in this latest video? It makes me believe that he really will turn 20 this year. His chin is more chiseled. And his profile, WOW!!!

    • I agree. He looks like the young man he is now. That, of course, until he decides to look and act 14 again. Cause he can do it. He morphs at will.

I also sensed a change in attitude. He seemed, I don’t know, more down-to-earth, slightly less upbeat? Like someone who is aware of the challenges ahead and I mean it in a good way. For the fanbase, at least, SBL early numbers were quite sobering.

      • Val,
Quite true. David is technically starting all over again with a more “sobering” approach.

      • raelovingangels

Yes, definately seems like some serious undertones. I SURE get the sense this album has been a struggle to come to a consensus… Would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall during some of those record meetings/calls.

  18. Thank you Rae for your article. This paradoxes of David are so true and yet much of it is why we are so drawn to him. I would like to add to the list (I hope I didn’t over look them):

He sings like an angel but hates to hear himself singing.
He’s sweetly boyish but wickedly manly. (Not that he’s trying, he just is)
