Notes on Some Video Girls

It’s only natural that our sexually conservative David would have equally conservative fans, but who knew how utterly squeamish and judgmental some folks could get?

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I will be the first to complain about the commercial sexploitation of young women in pop music, especially in our current porn culture, and it’s quite sad, really, that so many young girls in the business feel the pressure to “hypersexualize” their image, as is the case with some of the website images offered by some performers who will be appearing in David’s “Something ‘Bout Love” music video.

Regardless of how they market themselves, I at least thought it was cool of these video girls, like Ashley “Jaded” Jade-Thewlis and Loriel Andre’a, to tweet us with updates on the SBL video shoot.  Who knew that one would be attacked by a fan and the other commented on disparagingly on some of the fan sites?  Obviously, neither gal is “ethnically ambiguous,” so it’s safe to say neither one is the leading lady.

Sure, as David fans, we definitely have an idea of the kind of images he would condone pertaining to female sexuality and sensuality, but we have no idea how these video girls will appear in the video!  The same nearly nude Ashley Jaded described herself as looking like an “English paper boy” for her shoot, so I think the video images will be fine and tame if David has any say in it (and I’m sure he will make sure that he does).

Where I get a little antsy is this expectation that David should just refuse to work with anyone in the entertainment industry if they don’t live up to his personal code of ethics. Are you kidding me?!

Some of those in the fanbase need to wake up and get a clue about what work in Hollywood is really like for those establishing themselves in pop music.  There are all kinds of characters around. I think David has proven himself to be strong enough while also being laid back enough to work with all types.

He certainly doesn’t need his fans to intercede on his behalf!

I hope we can respect the space in which he operates and admire him for embracing all kinds while adhering to his own principles.  David is capable of doing this, and so should we.

As for our hot little video girl, this is what she had to say about David:

David is such a nice guy, such a pleasure working with him.. And the night continues!

David continues to conquer Hollywood, one worker at a time (no fan interference needed).

  1. This is the second rumbling I have run across online regarding fans attempting to “protect” David from LIFE! He has gotten this far following his own morals and standards for HIMSELF. No need having a bunch a hens clucking around him. Sometimes I think fans want to keep him in a certain image that they have of him.

    Another good opinion piece HG.

    sigh… …
To openly judge and criticize an actress hired to do a job, and to think that in anyway reflects on David is not only small minded and makes me sad, but shows a total lack of insight into the business that we are so lucky that David has chosen. Fortunately, that lovely young lady “took” the high road and ignored.

    • raelovingangels

Really embarrasing that someone calling themselves a fan of David would actually critize a professional hired to work with David. HOWEVER, I do think this is just a minor abberation and does not represent most of the fan base- which I have observed to be a caring and compassionate bunch,

  3. Rae, I realize it’s only a “minor” group in the fanbase, but they tend to get vocal, which is why I choose to counter vocal foolishness (especially when it’s done in David’s name) when I hear and see it! 😉

  4. I hope this video is edgy enough to drive these pearl clutchers off the edge. How boring! These types always show up at the most exciting times to spoil everybody else’s fun. Not that I won’t be a killjoy sometimes. Heh. Yes, HG. An AL kinda video would do the tricky.
    😆 😆 😆

  5. I agree with you all (and HG’s blog) completely!

HG, Agree on AL-type video, just to shake ’em up. 😉

  6. I read a looong convo between fans about the two girls pictured in your blog. They were called the b-word and got all kinds of crap thrown at them for wearing little clothes and portraying a “slutty” image. Luckily most of the fans defended the girls, which proves that most of the Archies indeed DO have common sense. It’s not like the girls cast in the music video are going to corrupt David or make him do a raunchy, out-of-character video – David has proven millions of times that he is the human equivalent for teflon and will not be pushed around. And the girls aren’t directing the video – they are ACTRESSES, which means they can step into any role given to them, so it is likely they will be putting some clothes on for David’s video 😆

David has met hundreds of people through his work, whether he has collaborated or just exchanged a few words with them. Among those people have been Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton etc. who all like to embrace their sensuality and aren’t afraid of wearing, well, nothing (in Gaga’s case anyway). David hasn’t judged them nor has he refused to talk to them because of their image.

Gosh, sorry, didn’t mean to write a novel on the subject! I just feel quite strongly about this 😛

  7. Thanks Embe, you addressed the situation and David’s non judgmental ways. He also can speak up when he sees a need without making a scene. In Crush video, I believe there was a tasteful costume change for the girl that did the somersault. The fan that complained the most on twitter was confronted yesterday. One twitterer in particular has had a reputation for being pretty confrontive for years on Noting David, Counting David’s Character etc. Keep in mind that some people are not necessarioy mentally stable and David’s music has offered them some inspiration and stability. David is the light that shines the brightest in these circumstances and would not see doing an AL video as the answer because that is not him. Sometimes in judging others there are two fingers pointing back at the accuser and those that accuse the accuser. It can become a vicious circle.

The Adam Lambert video comment was an attempt at being facetious, of course (do I need to spell that out?).

I mean, who here really expects that David would ever go there?

We were just fantasizing that it would be fun to watch the meltdown in Archuworld were such a thing ever to happen.

Gee, I was just having a phone conversation with a friend about how everything, everything! is taken quite literally on the Internet.

I guess I need to use more emoticons. 🙄

    • HG, with all due respect I don’t see any need for you to get riled up about this matter 🙂 I don’t see how anyone took your comment seriously or literally (though English isn’t my mother tongue so I may have misunderstood something??) – most of your readers know you are a humorous and clever woman and realise your comments vary from sarcastic to purely brilliant.

In any case, don’t feel the need to use smileys – you rock as you are.

    • hell0g0rge0us

Well, Embe, it wasn’t necessarily about getting “riled up” as just “fed up” with the very simplistic way that certain folks (well, a small minority but folks nonetheless) read things.

We make a joke about David doing an AL video – most people get it’s a joke, someone thinks it’s a real wishfulfillment (as if!).

Some professional actresses tweet about their experience on David’s SBL video set, and a certain fan (and others on other sites) get worked up over their provocative image.

What do their online profiles have to do with anything about David whatsoever?

Nothing! Except if you interpret everything literally, you think their sexually provocative ways will corrupt innocent sweet lil’ Davey!

I’m just annoyed because such thinking smacks of non-thinking. It’s so narrow and so small as to miss larger perspectives.

I’m not too crazy about it, so I rant.

Can’t help it. I hate ignorance and stupidity. Sorry to offend the “ignorant” and the “stupid”! 😛

      • Rant away – it’s your blog after all. I just don’t want to see you upset over someone else’s ignorance, since the fault is obviously theirs if they don’t get humour.

(BTW, totally off topic, but my band has a song called “Ignorance” – I wrote it based on world leaders who shut their eyes from important problems and also average Joes who act like the big issues don’t concern them. You can hear it on myspace.com/mojoplant if ya want.)

One thing I tend to wonder – though many would argue whether or not it’s my business to think about it or if it’s morally suitable – is David’s view on sexual matters. I know he doesn’t like public sexuality/nudity/foul language etc. But behind closed doors, can he actually totally block out EVERYTHING remotely sexual and not think about that kind of stuff in the privacy of his own imagination?

I find it interesting because we live in a world where one might find it hard to ignore all the half-naked celebrities, the commercials and ads and tv-shows and songs that contain something “inappropriate”, because they are simply everywhere. How does David do that? He’s not a monk – he doesn’t live inside the thick stone walls of a monastery. He is exposed to explicit stuff every single day, and even more so in his profession.

Am I the only one wondering this?

      • Embe!….we all go to the bathroom.

      • embe
“can he actually totally block out EVERYTHING remotely sexual and not think about that kind of stuff in the privacy of his own imagination? ”

He has stated many times when asked about having a girlfriend that he “isn’t ready yet” and in a relationship he would “need time to get to know the person well ” before doing anything so intimate as kissing.

Tame by most standards, but this is how David manages his life. He doesn’t respect the lifestyle that most people his age tolerate and might even succumb to. His maturity level is just right for him. It’s hard for some to grasp how he can remain so “unsexual”. Watching him sing one can witness where his passion lies. Music is his “lover”. For the time being he is courting her .

  9. I’ve been listening to SBL here:

    http://www.kiisfm.com/iplaylist/artist/1063668/ondemand.html

Under “Similar Artists,” they list Andrew Seeley (?????), Zac Efron, Jordin Sparks, David Cook (of course) and JUSTIN BIEBER!!!!!!!!!!

    • hell0g0rge0us

Well, Peter, in all fairness, as much as SBL is a fun and catchy song, when I first heard it, I got whiffs of Justin Bieber too.

    • But he can’t singggggggg!!!!!!!!!!

    • hell0g0rge0us

You know that and I know that (and by all counts, the rest of the world knows it too) but since when is singing well a criterion for getting radio play?

*Keeping fingers crossed that SBL is David’s breakthrough.*

I’m still miffed that Jive had a chance to create Archuleta Fever and didn’t long before Island records got to create Bieber Fever.

That David is the real deal makes this whole situation sad that David has to be described as a “similar artist” to the likes of the fetus.

  10. What?? I’ve been really busy w/the business of “living” in my Real Life, so I guess I missed some controversy regarding David’s video?

I get so tired of some fans trying to put David in a “box” of their choosing & I most likely have been accused of doing just that, however as time has gone on, I want David to do what he thinks is best for him. Have we not learned already that David doesn’t need, & I dare say doesn’t WANT our help in living his life. We are fans, not his “keepers” & he is doing just fine. I don’t think David will fall from grace because of who he is working with. He is strong & most likely very stubborn & will do as he will. As he said in so many words…”I am not a robot”. 😉

Now I must go check out what the controversy was all about…

  11. hell0g0rge0us

    Hey SF and GG!

It seems this will be a regular part of fan news and reaction to anything David does.

Some people just don’t want him to grow up.

  12. You say: “I think David has proven himself to be strong enough while also being laid back enough to work with all types.

He certainly doesn’t need his fans to intercede on his behalf!”

Still, I can understand why some fans are worried for him. We want to make sure that his interests are kept and no one puts him in situations he rather avoid.

    • hell0g0rge0us

But is that really a “fan’s” job? We all discuss our wishes, worries, and hopes for David, but that certainly doesn’t entitle a “fan” to contact a professional actress and lash out at her because she dares to appear in the same music video as him!

  13. hell0g0rge0us

    Re: Abrra and Embe’s comments.

In all honesty, I haven’t dwelled that much about what David thinks personally about sex. That’s his life, not mine.

My fantasy David is a lot less uptight about sensual things than the real David (even though in my dreams, he gets mixed up with the real David most of the time – hence why we never end up doing anything naughty in my dreams! haha!).

I’d rather leave the real David alone to make great music while the fantasy David is left to our own creative devices. 😉

    • I hope my comment didn’t come off as creepy and perverted! I didn’t mean to sound like David’s “weird” in any way for staying away from sexual topics and actions. I just wanted to express my amazement at how he is able to do that in this world and in his job. I really respect him for staying true to himself and think it’ll make those future intimate situations that much more special for him.

Obviously there are those female fans that would love to know more about David’s sensual side and his thoughts on the subject, but that is not to say anyone should be prying about it or making it the center of attention. Maybe some day he will talk about that in the same way he has talked about other stuff in COS – to influence young people.

We are all free to fantasize, not even David can stop that no matter how awkward he finds it – he is a very sensual and attractive person, and no one should feel guilty or dirty for thinking about him in a sexual light. That is also something that is perfectly normal, and I’m sure David understands that it’s human nature to do so. Just don’t go printing out R-rated scenarios with David as the main character and handing them to him 😀

  14. Embe, you certainly don’t come off as sounding “creepy or perverted,” and even if you did, I would definitely prefer it to some pearl-clutching fanatic who’d prefer to think David doesn’t have a sexual bone in his body! 😉

As for myself, what wouldn’t I give to overcome whatever barrier is keeping me from jumping the sexual bones of my fantasy David! 😛
