“I Coulda Been a Contender” Series: #1

I decided to schedule a number of posts in advance for a special series I’m calling “I Coulda Been a Contender.”  I’ve been on record elsewhere about my deep disappointment with David’s label, Jive, for not doing more to promote more singles off of his debut album.  On his first album, there were definitely a number of songs that I think should have had their moment to shine as singles.  “Crush” was a monster hit, compared to other songs released, like “A Little Too Not Over You” and “Touch My Hand.”  However, there were certainly stronger songs off the album – both from the standard and deluxe editions.

So, first up on the “I Coulda Been a Contender” series: WAITING FOR YESTERDAY.  David co-wrote this beauty, included on the bonus track of his deluxe album, and what I love about it (and why it would have been my choice for his second single over ALTNOY) is not just that lovely falsetto in the line “never let goooooo,” but also the lyrics, which I think showcase what a lover boy David is.  David is not a “bad boy,” which in today’s culture is considered the ultimate in super sexy Alpha Male characteristics.  David is a heart soother, not a heart breaker, and his sex appeal to me is captured in the persona of this single.  The bridge is, as some have said, a panty-dropping line:

I’m the one for you tonight / I’m the one for you forever
If it takes a little time / whatever it  takes / whatever it takes

Even on blog holiday, I’m doing my part to promote a worthy CD, which is almost close to platinum sales.  Enjoy!

  1. Good golly miss molly I have never heard THAT phrase before… “panty dropping line” in all my born days…! But I like it! On a Saturday morning no less…seems a little sinful…

I shall be very anxious to hear what is cued up on the HG Hit Parade.

One of my favorite lines is “Bring me to my knees and make me cry…” from You Can.

  2. ooooh HG I agree 100% about that line! It gave me the chills from the first time I heard it!

If Jive is smart (big IF, lol) they will give “Waiting for Yesterday” a new life by hooking it up with a movie soundtrack. It’s practically the storyline of a romantic comedy. Can’t you just see it playing in the background as Matthew McConaughey chases after his girl? Gaaaaah

  3. I guess I was feeling a bit naughty when I wrote that. heh.

Just quickly checking back in. I’m getting ready to go on vacation (hence my scheduling this series of posts in advance).

I’m so committed to this blog that I wanted to keep in active even while I’m on blog holiday.

Thanks for keeping the comments coming! 🙂

  4. Mikesd, did you see David’s last tweet to Jason C?

@jasoncastro aw I wish I was with you lol. In The Heights rocks!

Maybe there is something to that theory of yours? 😉

    • Didn’t see it but it definitely adds to my suspicions about their relationship. They may just be good friends and if so I hope that he is someone David can feel really comfortable being with and opening up to…

      • Good point Mike – I agree. I’m glad David is developing friendships with people from all paths of life whom he can lean on.

Did you happen to catch the Cincinnati performaces? I was so surprised. He was great as usual, but seemed especially comfortable in his own skin that night. Seems like having a bit more freedom is agreeing with him 🙂

  5. Hi HG!
    Hi Mikesd and LittleM!
I love WFY. For weeks I would listen to it on repeat – just that song. The lyrics melt my heart -you’re right HG, only sweet David could sing ‘I’m not gonna treat you like he did’ and have us believe him! And YAY for the pant-dropping bridge! To top it all the beat and melody are infectious. I love it more than ZG.
Have you seen David’s photo with a fan named Sophie? Lucky girl! He didn’t look terribly uncomfortable to me, either.
I love Castroleta! Whatever it turns out to be. Jason is gorgeous, although I think it’s time to clean up and let go of the rasta hair. He could wear it longish, but groomed.

  6. Valbraz – I agree about WFY. Hard to pick a favorite as it changes on my mood – but when pushed – after Crush, I love WFY. I love “If it takes a little time” and also the falsetto “never let gooo!” I love watching David perform this song.
