David at his whistling best with “Your Eyes Don’t Lie” (video by specialangel2005):
Fuller version (and up close!) of “Imagine” (video by ThinkofArchie):
Sigh. It’s like each new performance rekindles that David love. It’s all about the music. Jeff who?
How ironic that a scandal involving David’s father would break on the eve of Father’s Day weekend. Knowing that our fathers are not perfect (and I should know from personal experience), and recognizing that we don’t get to choose our parents or even avoid the family drama that comes our way, it’s still important to honor those who gave us life and who supported and nurtured us in whatever way they could.
For so many, Father’s Day is a day of reconciliation with our dads. And in honoring this holiday, I thought it appropriate to post here one of David’s performances of U2’s “One” from his solo tour:
“One” is a plea for reconciliation. In various renditions (most notably Mary J. Blige), the song takes on different meanings, especially when the R&B singer first performed it with U2 in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. U2’s “One” music video specifically narrates the alienation between a gay son and his homophobic father.
One day I hope to hear David perform the full version of this song and simply blow us away.
“We’re one, but we’re not the same / We get to carry each other / Carry each other…”
Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers in the world (including mine, including David’s).
